Since the beginning I loved the concept and idea of Layar. So it was literally the first app I tried to get on my Legend. Bad luck, hope it will be fixed soon!!

ps. review the Comment-module, since the feedback at recuired fields is showing the informative ‘Lorem ipsum dolar’ =)

That sux, Layar was about the only reason I wanted to get an android phone, and I chose the Legend :(

  • By Bert on March 20th 2010 at 12:46 pm

Are you placing a news-item If there is any news, about Layar on the Legend ?

  • By Nick (The Netherlands) on March 21st 2010 at 2:51 am

Pity :( Any clue when a solution is ready? Layar was one of the reasons I went HTC Legend/Android too.

  • By Maurice on March 22nd 2010 at 8:45 am

We are still working on a solution. We hope to be available for the Legend asap.

  • By Zap on March 22nd 2010 at 2:05 pm

Can we please get the possibility to receive an email notice if this gets resolved?
    Thanks!!

I have my legend for 2 days now and i really want to use layar, it’s THE reason i wanted android on my phone!:( Hurry up developers!:P

  • By eric on March 23rd 2010 at 1:29 pm

this was also a big reason for me to get a android htc , i hope its fixed asap !!

  • By n0mad on March 23rd 2010 at 4:17 pm

For god sake :) Please guys fix this as soon as possible :) But hey … Layar is not the only app affected. Barcode Scanner while it works with the APK is nowhere to be found on the market. Wikitude is also nowhere to be found …

    @ n0mad

Those apps can be installed via a manual APK. Doing so with Layar doesn’t work either…

  • By n0mad on March 26th 2010 at 5:50 pm

barcode scanner install worked for me with the APK … but that’s the only one … rest is FUBAR

Can somebody (perhaps from Layar) please let us know what the actual problem is?
And whose responsibility it is, for fixing it?

  • By redactie on March 29th 2010 at 5:41 pm

yh, I can tell you that we cannot fix it.. We are awaiting an official response from HTC…

  • By Nick (the Netherlands) on March 29th 2010 at 8:25 pm

Cannot fix it?????? Does that mean it a hardware issue? If yes, what is wrong? I’m very worried now!

  • By Alex on March 29th 2010 at 9:16 pm

This is what i found about te problems, Google has forgotten to add the HTC legend to their database, so we cannot find and use te apk’s in the marketplace such as layer.

  • By Meerbeek on March 30th 2010 at 9:07 am

Grrr if only i read this earlier, tried manually downloading / installing the apk lol

  • By yh on March 30th 2010 at 9:26 am

The issue is with the camera (see Maurice’s originating post).
HTC is responsible for providing (or facilitating) a solution (see redactie’s post).
…and even if the issue is indeed an entry (or a check-box) in the Google database, still the only way to have this fixed is via HTC?

I have e-mailed HTC Customer Support yesterday on this matter. (but they have not responded yet)

Perhaps everyone should do the same (if not already). Surely, we all purchased the Legend expecting it to work well with top-notch applications like Layar? (…and “customer is king”, right?)

I got a Legend, too, hoping to run Layar on it, and really looking forward to that. Sorry to hear that it’s not possible yet! Hope you’ll get some answers and help on the issues soon, good luck.

[your comment form says the website field is optional, but when I don't type a URL, I can't post my comment, plus I get a "Lorem ipsum" text that probably would like to urge me to type a URL. Could you look into that? Thanks!]

yh , I emailed HTC many times about this … they seem clueless

It’s a pity … I’m quite pissed off at them right now

  • By michelle on March 31st 2010 at 1:08 am

Unlike the Legend owners, I’ve got a MotoBlur and the Layar app is causing the phone to constantly reboot… is there a support area for this app?

  • By Maurice on March 31st 2010 at 5:32 am

    UPDATE

Sorry, but we still didn’t received an official statement and estimated time-frame from HTC. As soon as we have it we share it with you.

  • By Nick (The Netherlands) on March 31st 2010 at 1:19 pm

I did receive a reaction from them though:
    —–>

Basically it says its a software issue and layar has said it needs to be solved by them… things are getting weirder and weirder….

  • By René on March 31st 2010 at 2:30 pm

Ik heb dezelfde reactie van HTC:

  • By Tol on April 2nd 2010 at 12:09 pm

    Hello HTC,
I got the barrcode scan to function but even with the correct layar apk (via barrcode) it does not install on the Legend. Fix should come from Google Android ! They must make a system update.
Please use your contacts to inform Google asap.

  • By n0mad on April 2nd 2010 at 12:22 pm

    This is so pathetic …

  • By Maurice on April 2nd 2010 at 12:35 pm

    Short Update:

HTC is still looking into this problem. There is nothing we can do from our side at this moment. When we have an official statement from HTC we will update you all on this issue.

  • By tol on April 2nd 2010 at 12:45 pm

I wish I bought the iPhone!

  • By Ebo on April 2nd 2010 at 2:14 pm

This is not funny! Seems ShopSavvy and several other Apps also have problems. Suggest Software devs, HTC and Google stop pointing fingers! Time to switch phone? Again (…)

  • By Freek on April 3rd 2010 at 4:01 pm

    @Maurice

What exactly constitutes an official statement? Eg. do we know they’re looking into it because HTC said they are or are we assuming they are?

  • By yh on April 3rd 2010 at 7:03 pm

Can we focus on Layar and the HTC Legend in this thread?
Please report problems with other apps at their respective suppliers…

What I still find very annoying is that nobody seems to accept responsibility. Without this step, this problem will not be solved.

Maurice (or someone else from Layar), can you let us know if we should be trying to get HTC to take action on this matter, or Google??

  • By Maurice on April 4th 2010 at 1:08 pm

@Freek We know HTC is looking into this, because we’re in direct contact with them regarding the Legend. So no assumptions…

  • By rooomish on April 5th 2010 at 10:51 am

Still waiting… What is the actual stage of solving the problem?
    Thanks

  • By MD1500 on April 5th 2010 at 5:52 pm

Seems the HTC Desire is suffering from the same issues?
Layar is not available on that either.

  • By Jaap on April 5th 2010 at 7:27 pm

Shopsavvy, barcode scanner, Goggles, found the apk’s and they all run smoothly on my legend. It’s a shame the same can not be said about Layar. installing it results in a parsing error so it seems like we’ll need a firmware update from HTC. I hope to run Layar soon, it seems great.

  • By n0mad on April 6th 2010 at 12:52 pm

Well … it’s been almost a month since phone release … and still no layar, no word from google , no fix … *sigh*

  • By Tol on April 6th 2010 at 2:17 pm

Here the answer I got from HTC, pointing to Layar for the answers!

    ——-
Thank you for contacting HTC. It seems to me that you are asking about a 3rd party application called Layar. Unforunatly I cannot help you with a 3rd party application, you will need to contact the manufacturer. Whilst Google do make the Android operating system, it is actually up to the designers of application to ensure that their application is compatible with the operating system. I hope that that clarifies the situation for you. All the best, Jonathan

  • By Tol on April 6th 2010 at 2:47 pm

This issue seems to come back at the release of all new devices. The HTC desire and the Motorola have simular issues. It seems that google is behind on updating their “compatibility database”.

    Explaination HTC:
For all new released devices the makers (HTC etc) need to supply Google with a “fingerprint” that identifies the ROM and this needs to be updated in their database with compatibility info and such so that the correct apps can be shown. Such as the market filtering out incompatible apps. HTC supply these before relaese of all new ROM’s and devices however they do not know how long it takes for Google to update their database.

What I don’t understand is if I download the Layar apk file (not from Android Market) than I am still not able to install Layar.

  • By Tol on April 7th 2010 at 9:48 am

    Dear Layar,
Where can we download the latest version of Layar that is compatible to the THC legend? I have tried a few alternative sites but these versions do not install on the Legend.

  • By n0mad on April 7th 2010 at 9:50 am

    Good question from Tol …

If not possible to get Layar from market … Could you provide us with a compatible APK file ?

  • By Freek on April 7th 2010 at 12:50 pm

    @n0mad

The manual APK is available but doesnt install on the Legend due to some issue with the camera.

  • By n0mad on April 8th 2010 at 5:22 pm

Mark Moons , Director of HTC Benelux announced an HTC update to solve “camera issuers” for things like Layar

    Source: http://twitter.com/markmoons

But after that, will Layar be visible on the market ? :)

  • By Maurice on April 9th 2010 at 7:45 am

@Nomad If HTC solves the camera issues we will be visible in the market again

Htc please do something about this layar app.

  • By Alex on April 10th 2010 at 10:12 pm

As google maitain a database with all firmwares and apps available to them, I think there will be no progress untill htc upgrade it

  • By Tom on April 11th 2010 at 10:45 pm

I has to be something else. If it is just an entry in a database it should be possible to install the APK file without the market. But layar and some other apps can’t be installed even this way.

  • By Bert on April 12th 2010 at 10:09 am

I also bought a Legend, unaware of the problems with Layar and other aps. If this is not solved very quickly this will be my last htc and/or Android phone! As we all can see the answers from htc witch some of our fellow Legend owners included is completely standard. Each one exactly the same as the other! They don’t seem to take their clients serious. Layar designers, please give daily updates as we are hungry for news. No news is also news! Keep us up to date.

  • By Erik on April 12th 2010 at 9:43 pm

When I install the Layer.apk manualy, then I get the following error in the Android logging:

    04-12 23:27:49.147: ERROR/PackageManager(78): Package com.layar requires unavailable feature android.hardware.camera; failing!

It looks like that the package manager from the Legend does not know that he has a camera, so I think that is the reason for the announced Legend update.

  • By Erik on April 12th 2010 at 11:21 pm

if Layer (temporarily) removes the option: “Require android.hardware.camera” from the AndroidManifest.xml, then the application will work.
I tested it on my Legend, steps to do it yourself:

    1) extract AndroidManifest.xml from Layar.apk with 7-zip
    2) overwrite the text “android.hardware.camera” in this file with 00 with a hex-editor i.e. HxD
    3) put AndroidManifest.xml back to Layar.apk with 7-zip
    4) empty the folder: META-INF with 7-zip
    5) re-sign the APK with Jarsigner
    6) install APK on Legend
    7) Enjoy Layar!

ps: when there is a update for Layar, you first must de-install your self-signed APK file..

  • By Freek on April 13th 2010 at 7:04 am

I called HTC and asked them about the update and it appears I cannot update my phone since it was obtained through my provider Vodafone.
As it appears Vodafone created their own software version which is different from the original one from HTC. Thats why it gives the message that im already using the latest version. The only solution to this is to ask Vodafone when they are sending out a new update of their software. I didnt want to wait for that so i installed the version of Layar from tweakers.net. It works fine now on my Legend.
